The real meaning of sustainability

According to the Wikipedia definition, sustainability is "a principle of action for the use of resources, in which a permanent satisfaction of needs is to be guaranteed by preserving the natural regenerative ability of the systems involved (especially living beings and ecosystems)."

Sustainable in the true sense means "lasting for a long time, having a strong impact on the future" . The theory of the widely used sustainability triangle summarizes the areas of ecology, economy and social affairs under the term. The three-pillar model follows a similar approach, which states that the three areas are inevitably dependent on one another. Sustainability is therefore a holistic concept that affects all areas of our social existence and not just climate protection.

In its Sustainable Development Goals , the UN has defined 17 criteria that are intended to ensure sustainable development on an economic, social and ecological level. These approaches serve as a guide and are designed to help governments and stakeholders to promote and ensure sustainable development.

A sustainable lifestyle therefore means being aware of the consequences of one's own way of life and shaping one's actions in such a way that they have as few negative effects as possible on the immediate environment and future generations in terms of economic, social and climatic aspects.

What can I personally do for a more sustainable lifestyle?

I personally have been concerned with the topic of sustainability for a long time, especially how I manage to do without plastic. I try to do my best to live a more sustainable lifestyle, but I also realize that it's a process and doesn't happen overnight. Switching to glass bottles, not using plastic bags when shopping and a reusable coffee-to-go cup were the first steps. The more I deal with the topic, the more alternatives I see in everyday life.

Even with small changes in everyday life, we can actively contribute to doing something good for the environment. Nobody expects us to immediately and completely change our lives and live 100% sustainably. But each of us can do our best to keep our carbon footprint as small as possible and sacrifice some amenities for the sake of the environment. In the blog post 10 Zero Waste Tips for Sustainability in Everyday Life , we give you some tips that you can implement immediately.
